Business Plan Competition

The Results of the University of Washington Business Plan Competition:

Everything went very well. The team put together an excellent investment oriented presentation, and we were all well prepared for the judges questions. Finally at the awards banquet all the hard work, blood, sweat, and tears paid off, as they proceeded to announce "MEDS, 'Best Idea in the International Catergory'." We were all very excited being a full undergraduate team up against the majority of teams with members currently involved in Master Programs, or having years of industry experience equivalent to that of our parents.

We have plans to use the prize money to fund a feasibility study to Cameroon. The next big steps we have planned are finding an Executive Director to really provide the necessary leadership of opening the doors to the institution.

Countdown

So the MEDS team is counting down the days until the long presentation and Awards Banquet, which is scheduled for this Tuesday, May 24th. We appreciate all the good thoughts coming our way. For the long presentation round, we will be presenting our business to a panel of judges, similar to the situation of a venture capitalist presentation. We have been working with awesome mentors, a former PM for Excel,a BOA member for the Millenium Fund, and our all time greatest mentor of them all, the CEO of a successful, up and coming technology/security firm. The structure looks great, it's now a matter of us putting in our due dilligence of practice, practice, and more practice. I will definitely be posting the outcomes and results.

UW Business Plan Competition

Our team is currently competing in the University of Washington Business Plan Competition, a highly recognized competition in the Seattle area. We competed in the Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition this last winter, sadly didn't place, but gained beneficial feedback from the experience. We are competing in this competition to not only win money for our intial financing, but to also gain contacts and establish networks of individuals who can provide support to us in the future.

The current status of MEDS in this competition:

DEADLINE 1
Business Plan Initial Screening - April 8th, 2005
75 Business Plans turned in, 30 advanced to the Investors Round

DEADLINE 2
The Investors Round - April 28th, 2005
The 30 teams that advanced compete in a trade fair-like round, which involves one-on-one selling with over 120 influential business people from Seattle. Judges ranged from venture capitalist, lawyers, executives, philanthropic funders, and entrepreneurs. We are one of three non profits. Who advances is based on how judges ' invest' in participating teams.

16 teams advanced to the next round. MEDS: the only non profit to be in the finals

DEADLINE 3
Final Business Plans - May 12th, 2005
I hope we get to sleep

DEADLINE 4
Long Presentation Round - May 24th, 2005

Executive Summary

Mission and Vision Statement:
MEDS strives to establish quality medical training, employee placement services, and exchange opportunities between Africa and the United States by improving technical health care education for young African adults, providing rewarding employment opportunities, and strengthening the relationship between the
United States and Africa.

The Current Situation:
Africa is experiencing a pandemic of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases which impair the health of individuals and prosperity of societies. There is a high demand among secondary graduates to attain further education, but the technical institutions and universities are in short supply. Even though many have the passion and financial means necessary for higher education, many potential students are being turned away. Additionally, minimal unskilled employment opportunities force many to live at or below the poverty line and the region is also in desperate need of medical aid and assistance.

The Opportunity:
Medical Education and Development Services (MEDS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting individual and social esteem through education. MEDS trains, certifies, and provides employment placement services for African young adults as Medical Laboratory Technicians within Cameroon. MEDS is establishing the first Medical Laboratory Technician Training institution in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Staffed with experienced medical experts, along with students and faculty from the University of Washington, MEDS provides a highly interpersonal and stimulating educational environment. Upon completion of the MEDS program, the graduates will be equipped with the necessary skills to give back to their communities in immeasurable ways.

Services and Benefits:
• Two-year intensive training and certification program instructed by international experts in the medical field
• Employment placement connects graduates with local, secure, and career-enhancing opportunities
• Strategic partnerships with local hospitals, government, and businesses for employment and practicum work

Competitive Strategies:
MEDS will be the first and only international MLT training and education institution in Cameroon. Its distinctive competitive edge is secured in the fact that MEDS will not only educate individuals in underdeveloped nations, but will also seek out and secure quality employment positions for its graduates.

Scalability and Future Growth:
MEDS is committed to eliminating idle resources and will therefore make the training clinic accessible for local hospitals to utilize. In addition to steadily increasing class enrollment size and number medical students teaching at the facility, MEDS also plans to scale-out operations by utilizing our partnerships with other organizations throughout the continent.

Revenue and Funding Sources:
MEDS generates revenue from four primary sources 1) MLT program tuition paid by Cameroonian students 2) US university exchange program fee 3) grants and donations from philanthropic organizations and private donors, and 4) clinical testing services for local hospitals and laboratories.
